TOYOTA AUSTRALIA EXTENDS RECALL RELATING TO PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AIRBAGS

Toyota Australia is extending the range of vehicles involved in the passenger side front airbag safety recall that was previously announced on certain vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators.

The recall impacts Yaris and Avensis Verso vehicles built between April 2003 and December 2008.

Toyota Australia is still assessing the number of vehicles impacted in the Australian market.

There have been no confirmed incidents or injuries reported to Toyota Australia as a result of this condition.

Toyota Australia will be contacting impacted customers within the earliest possible timeframes to advise them of this issue. For further information, Toyota owners can contact the Toyota recall campaign helpline on 1800 987 366 or visit www.toyota.com.au.

REPRINT OF 13 MAY 2015 MEDIA RELEASE

13 May 2015

TOYOTA AUSTRALIA RECALLS 181,000 VEHICLES

Toyota Australia is initiating safety recalls for certain vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators.

In Australia approximately 181,000 vehicles built between 2003 and 2007 are involved, including Corolla, Yaris, Avensis Verso, Echo and RAV4. A full list of impacted vehicles and the production periods can be found below.

These recalls are due to the potential that, depending on the vehicle, either the driver's or passenger's airbag inflators may be susceptible to moisture intrusion over time.

If this happens, this could potentially make the inflator assembly prone to rupture during an accident, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant.

There have been no incidents or injuries reported in Australia as a result of this condition.

Affected vehicle owners will be notified of the recall by mail and will be informed when parts become available.

Replacement parts are presently being prepared and, due to the number of vehicles impacted globally, it is anticipated that sufficient parts will be available to commence recall repairs by early next year.

When parts are available, all affected vehicle owners will again be advised by mail and asked to take their vehicle to any authorised Toyota dealer. Depending on the vehicle, either the driver's or passenger's airbag inflator will be replaced free of charge. The replacement will take approximately 1.5 hours.

For further information, Toyota owners can contact the Toyota recall campaign helpline on 1800 987 366 or visit www.toyota.com.au.

Background
Toyota Australia has previously announced a recall for airbag inflators on some of these vehicle models, applying to different production date ranges.

This means that none of the vehicles announced in today's recall were impacted in the previous campaigns and owners are not being contacted twice about the same issue.

Since the previous recalls were announced, Toyota Motor Corporation has been conducting various investigations on Takata-produced airbag inflators.

Among the parts collected from the overseas markets, certain types of airbag inflators were found to have a potential for moisture intrusion over time. As a result, they could be susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash.

Globally, for certain types of front passenger's and front driver's airbag inflators which could be susceptible to deploy abnormally, we are either initiating a new recall or expanding the production period of our existing recalls to involve approximately 5 million additional Toyota vehicles worldwide.
